The Best Infrared Face Mask (and How to Spot a Real One)
Near-infrared light is invisible, which makes it easy for listings to overstate. Here's how to check, and the mask we recommend.

Quick answer
A real infrared face mask lists a near-infrared wavelength, usually around 830–850nm.
The AWA LX500 lists 850nm near-infrared, paired with 630nm red in its main mode. Because near-infrared is invisible, the mask only looks red when it's on. That's normal.
What "infrared" means on a face mask
Infrared light sits just past the red end of the visible spectrum. Face masks use near-infrared, typically 830nm to 850nm. It's different from the far-infrared heat used in saunas and heating pads.
Because you can't see it, the only way to know a mask includes near-infrared is the spec sheet. If a listing says "infrared" without a number in nanometers, ask the seller or move on.

Infrared face mask benefits: what to expect
Why it's paired with red
Near-infrared is used alongside red light in most masks aimed at fine lines and skin texture. Red and near-infrared together are the main reason to buy a mask over a simple red-only device.
Keep expectations realistic
Research is promising, but results vary and build over weeks of consistent use. Use a mask with a return window long enough to judge it fairly. The LX500's is 60 days, opened or used.

What to check before you buy any red light mask
- Exact wavelengths in nanometers. Look for numbers like 630nm or 660nm (red), 830nm or 850nm (near-infrared) and 415nm (blue). "7 colors" tells you nothing.
- Near-infrared included. Most masks aimed at fine lines pair red with near-infrared. It's invisible, so check the spec sheet, not the photos.
- A return policy that covers used masks. You can't judge fit or comfort without wearing it. 30 days is the minimum; 60 is better.
- Fit and material. Flexible silicone conforms to more face shapes than rigid plastic shells.
- Cordless and session length. A mask you can wear while moving around is a mask you'll actually use.
- Eye comfort. Check whether eye protection is included and what the instructions say about keeping eyes closed.
- Careful FDA wording. "FDA cleared" applies to specific devices for specific uses. If it matters to you, ask the seller which device and which use.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see the infrared light?
Near-infrared (around 850nm) is outside the range the human eye can see. When the LX500 runs Mode 1, you see the red 630nm light; the 850nm near-infrared is working alongside it invisibly.
Is near-infrared the same as a heat lamp?
No. Face masks use near-infrared LEDs at low power. Saunas and heating pads use far-infrared heat. They're different parts of the spectrum.
How often should I use the LX500?
AWA recommends about 10 minutes per session, 3 to 4 times a week, on clean, bare skin. Apply serums and moisturizer after your session, not before.
Is an LED mask safe to use at home?
Follow the user manual. Keep your eyes closed during use and don't look directly into the LEDs. AWA advises talking to your healthcare provider first if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, use an implanted device, or take medication that increases light sensitivity. An LED mask is not a substitute for medical care.
What if it doesn't work for me?
AWA offers returns within 60 days of delivery for a full refund, even if the mask is opened or used. There's no restocking fee and they cover return shipping within the US. Email AWA first and they'll guide you through it.
